Is it normal that in today’s modern organization an administrative staff remains in the same post for 30 years without a single promotion being offered to them although the latter have improved their academic qualifications, gained significant relevant knowledge and developed several skills? So, you want to be an Executive Assistant in rural Alberta?Being in a supportive position to the CAO, and managers of various industries in three countries for over 30 years, I have learned to weather the storms, and ride the waves of economical and political changes.I am bilingual and sometimes regret not having maintained the two other languages I have learned for work. This helps me understand different habits and cultures. As Executive Assistant I am very thankful for the fantastic opportunities to work with and alongside visionaries and great, inspiring leaders and mentors.Some of them were, like me, rebellious students in their college years, trying to make the world a better place. I live to organize, create, structure, prepare, to be ready to assist in the most complex processes without losing focus. But out of focus we are sometimes. With rising conspiracy theories and much global uncertainty local governments everywhere experience higher waves of change than other industries.As Executive Assistants, women in Legislative Services, and similar supportive roles, we serve, we remind of procedures, we remain calm, we clean-up.If we jive with our administration, we become one with the passionate and often creative engagement our bosses bring to the table, and feel all aspects of our boss's challenging position to serve a Council and a great diversity in rural, or urban communities. Some of us live in communities we serve. We understand questions of our neighbours. Communication is essential amongst good neighbours.We appreciate transparency. As we appreciate privacy. We get 'both sides'.Executive Assistants understand the struggle of bringing people together and meticulously balance our (work) life.In our work, we depend and are thankful for many other minds and hands to do their job right, so we can excel in our position.
