ABOUT THE BOOK: ANIMAL COMPANIONS: IN OUR HEARTS, OUR LIVES AND OUR WORLD

Dr. Diane Pomerance has completed her trilogy of animal appreciation books with ANIMAL COMPANIONS: IN OUR HEARTS, OUR LIVES AND OUR WORLD.  Dr. Pomerance's previous two books WHEN YOUR PET DIES and ANIMAL COMPANIONS:  YOUR FRIENDS, TEACHERS & GUIDES have helped children and adults adjust to and recover from the loss of a beloved companion animal and remind us how valuable animals are to our existence.

ANIMAL COMPANIONS: IN OUR HEARTS, OUR LIVES AND OUR WORLD continues and elaborates upon Dr. Pomerance's message that…we and our fellow creatures are both interconnected and interdependent.  The future of our planet depends upon that understanding.

In this book, beautifully illustrated by Vanessa Mier, Dr. Pomerance reminds us that humans share with animals the experiences of love, loyalty and fidelity, noting that many species mate for life and grieve a loved one.  She points out that animals provide human beings with an acceptance of who we are and that there is a place and purpose for every living creature.

In simple, vivid and easy to understand prose, Dr. Pomerance shows how their co-existence has not just served humans in practical matters, in such capacities as transportation, clothing and food, but also as a means for us to connect with nature and the natural world.  The author takes our history with animals a step further, telling us that animals have acted as spiritual guides for many of us and taught us the meaning of unconditional love and forgiveness.  She reminds us that animals live in harmony with their environment, offering humans a valuable example.

While Dr. Pomerance focuses on the universal animal world, she also explains that in today's highly technological, complex and impersonal world, animals remain a pivotal link to Nature.  Many of us who live in urban environments and who have little contact with Nature now rely on our animal companions for the comfort and healing and beauty of the natural world. Our animals also teach us about joy and pain, friendship and loyalty, loss and mortality as well as forgiveness and unconditional love.

The latter pages of the book contain more educational material for both children and adults.  It is a special section of poems and quotes which support the points Dr. Pomerance makes throughout the book.

ANIMAL COMPANIONS is a beautiful and uplifting book in and of itself; it is also a wonderful companion to WHEN YOUR PET DIES and ANIMAL COMPANIONS:  YOUR FRIENDS, TEACHERS & GUIDES.  These books remind us “as gently as the brush of a dove's" wing – how we are all connected to a universal cycle of the Spirit of Life.

"
This is simply a wonderful book that explores the spiritual ties between humans and animals.  The wise and compassionate message found within these pages reminds us of our interconnectedness with all living beings.  Submerged in fast-paced and demanding lives, our relationship with animals and nature is an incredible resource to heal the heart and soul.  With their unconditional capacity to love, animals serve as role models for human existence.  This book is a great addition for all those interested in promoting compassion and respect for future generations."

"
Animal rescue groups strive to find forever homes for abandoned and neglected animals after restoring them to health.  Working in the field, you quickly discover the animals do so much more for us than we do for them.  Dr. Pomerance has not only experienced this, but is able to articulate to both children and adults the lessons we can learn from them:  unconditional love, total acceptance, forgiveness – the list goes on.  She shares with us the harmony of all living things on this planet, the benefits of recognizing and living with them.  Her prose is almost lyrical, making ANIMAL COMPANIONS a beautiful gift or addition to the home library for anyone who shares the awe and wonder of the balance of life on this planet and our journey through it."
