helped children and adults adjust to and recover from the loss
of a beloved companion animal and remind us how valuable
animals are to our existence.

continues and elaborates upon Dr. Pomerance's message that…we
and our fellow creatures are both interconnected and
interdependent. The future of our planet depends upon that
understanding.
In this book, beautifully illustrated by Vanessa Mier, Dr.
Pomerance reminds us that humans share with animals the
experiences of love, loyalty and fidelity, noting that many
species mate for life and grieve a loved one. She points out
that animals provide human beings with an acceptance of who we
are and that there is a place and purpose for every living
creature.
In simple, vivid and easy to understand prose, Dr. Pomerance
shows how their co-existence has not just served humans in
practical matters, in such capacities as transportation,
clothing and food, but also as a means for us to connect with
nature and the natural world. The author takes our history
with animals a step further, telling us that animals have
acted as spiritual guides for many of us and taught us the
meaning of unconditional love and forgiveness. She reminds us
that animals live in harmony with their environment, offering
humans a valuable example.
While Dr. Pomerance focuses on the universal animal world, she
also explains that in today's highly technological, complex and
impersonal world, animals remain a pivotal link to Nature.
Many of us who live in urban environments and who have little
contact with Nature now rely on our animal companions for the
comfort and healing and beauty of the natural world. Our
animals also teach us about joy and pain, friendship and
loyalty, loss and mortality as well as forgiveness and
