from the Publisher When Your Pet
Dies is the only current nonfiction illustrated book about recovery from
pet loss written expressly for children five to ten years old. It is also the
only children's nonfiction book which offers grief recovery tools as they pertain
to pet loss. Written by a Grief Recovery Specialist and illustrated by a 15-year
old artist, it raises a child's awareness of his/her own mortality and the ageless
subject of the purposefulness of life and all living things. It offers
comfort, support and inspiration for adults as well as children and inspires its
readers to value and appreciate all forms of life and to respect animals as friends,
teachers and guides. It celebrates the unique bond and relationship many children
have with companion animals. | | |

from the Author It is after the heartbreaking
experience of losing my beloved Alaskan Malamute, Caesar, to cancer that I began
to grieve. I never associated the concept of grief with the loss of a pet, but
I realized that I was experiencing many of the classic symptoms of grief: i.e.
sadness, helplessness, loneliness, anxiety, uncontrollable crying, feeling emotionally
drained and "empty", withdrawing from social interaction, etc.
I began to read about and research the subject of pet loss and eventually received
my training and certification as a Grief Recovery Specialist. I learned that to
identify and express grief are very important in the healing process. I also came
to recognize that loss is an inevitable fact of life. There are many
different kinds of loss: death of a spouse, death of a child, divorce, separation,
disease or a debilitating illness, etc. I specifically wrote a children's
book on pet loss because there is so little material available on the subject
and because I realized that it would be invaluable for children to learn grief
recovery skills that will serve them through all kinds of losses for the rest
of their lives. Author's Bio DIANE
POMERANCE received her Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Michigan,
Ann Arbor. She has been certified as a Grief Recovery Specialist by the internationally
recognized Grief Recovery Institute. She was trained directly by the founder of
the Institute, John W. James. Dr. Pomerance counsels those grieving from
any loss; however, she has a special interest in those mourning the loss of a
beloved companion animal. The loss of a pet can be devastating to adults as well
as children. Dr. Pomerance is an active volunteer for the SPCA of Texas,
K-9 Friends Visiting Therapy Dogs of GTDOG, and the Texas Alaskan Malamute Rescue.
She lives in North Texas with her husband and twelve canine "kids".
